Mini-Forest

What is the Iowa Mini-Forest Project?

We started out as a simple environmental book club, but one of our books inspired us to become much more. Now we are the Iowa Mini-Forest Project, planters of the first mini-forest in Iowa and advocates for the creation of mini-forests throughout the state.

What is a mini-forest?

Mini-forests are densely populated forests grown within a small space. Planted according to Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki’s revolutionary growing technique, the native trees and shrubs in a mini-forest need only about 15-20 years to reach maturity, while normal forests take more than a century to develop. The compact design of mini-forests makes them perfect for urban spaces, providing beauty and the environmental benefits of regular traditional forests.

Iowa's first mini-forest

We created Iowa’s first Mini-Forest at  Brookview Park in West Des Moines. We worked with Waukee school students, the City of West Des Moines, volunteers, and more over the course of 2 days to prepare a site no bigger than a tennis field and plant around 1,200 native Iowa trees.

Where Can I Visit a Mini-Forest?

Iowa currently has one Mini-Forest, which you can visit in Brookview Park in West Des Moines. While mini-forests are new to Iowa, there are numerous others located around the world. In addition to forests spread across the U.S and Canada, you can find mini-forests throughout Europe and Asia.

How can I plant a mini-Forest

The process begins by choosing a location for your mini-forest, carefully preparing the soil, and then planting native trees and shrubs. For about the first three years, your mini-forest will need regular weeding, mulching, and watering. After that, the forest should be self-sustaining, and you can sit back and enjoy the mini-forest you created.

How Can I Plant A Mini-Forest?

The best way to get involved in the Brookview Mini-Forest is to volunteer. We encourage people of all ages to participate and experience the mini-forest firsthand. Typical tasks for a mini-forest volunteer include weeding, mulching, and watering. Another way to get involved is to plant your own mini-forest! We would be delighted to help you with your planning.
